There was a rather unusual – and funny – meme floating around this afternoon. All of a sudden, a slew of people started tweeting (and status updating @ Facebook):

Sometimes I just want to copy someone else’s status, word for word, and see if they notice.

Sensing an opportunity, I created a list and started tracking who all said this. Much to my surprise, it went mini-viral pretty soon.

What’s even more interesting is what you see when you try and search for the same at twitter:

The only way you can really find it on twitter is by reducing the search terms – unfortunately it appears complex search strings overwhelm them.

We’ve come a long way since we launched last December. We’ve been hard at work over the last few months adding more features, but we’ve also worked hard to improve both stability and speed. Of course, the biggest thing you will notice first is the UI.

We’ve listened to your feedback and spent a lot of time on improving both the UI and UX of nsyght.

Here is our brand spanking new homepage

But the UI goodness doesn’t end there. Top to bottom, nsyght has a completely fresh coat of paint, a lot easier on the eyes, and is simpler to navigate and understand.

So what are we releasing today?

Lists

Think of lists as the combination of a Facebook group (or, ahem, a Twitter list), with a saved search. What makes it pretty interesting is that you can do one or the other, or combine elements of both! Want to follow your friends? Check. What if you wanted to see just the videos posted by a select group of friends? Check. Ok, what if you wanted to see discussions about videos relating to SXSW – posted by Robert Scoble? Ok, you’re getting the idea – lists can be pretty neat.

Oh, we support twitter lists, and lists of course are not just limited to just Twitter users, you can create a list spanning all the networks you use. You also have the ability to create private lists too. To see more about this groovy feature, check out our list screencast @ vimeo.

Lists let you to filter & search your stream any way you like

Mute

What if you need to be a bit more, ahem, *aggressive* in filtering your stream? Like, someone who posts brilliant photos on Flickr, but loves telling you about every bit of minutia in their lives on Twitter? What if that someone is your Mom or significant other? Well, unfollowing them is not the answer: mute them instead!

Don't unfollow! Mute on a service by service basis

Muting is great because you avoid your Mom using quitter and discovering that you’ve well and truly cut the cord (would make for an interesting Christmas though right?) – muting is not in any way public, plus it allows you to toggle back and forth without any notification being sent to the effected user.

Cool info

So muting and lists are pretty interesting, but are they easy to access? Sure thing, just hover your mouse over a users avatar, and you can see more information about them before you add them to a list or decide to follow them.

New hover popup lets you see more specific information about that user

*Spanking* new profile pages

Now you can see more information at a glance, and give your friends an easy way to share stuff that you’ve discovered!

New profile page. Snazzy, but also pretty useful

Myspace

Lastly, we’ve added Myspace support to nsyght to help boost the music and sharing we have across the platform. Like with Facebook and Twitter, you can see what your friends are up to, post status updates, and share items to/from Myspace as well!

Where are we going from here?

We’ve spent a lot of time getting content aggregation and friends-driven search right at nsyght. Now, we are storing/indexing/crawling social data for more than 12 million users in real and near real time (users+friends+intersection of their friends). We have a lot of data, and we think we are doing a pretty good job making it searchable. BUT, a firehose that can be filtered and faceted, well, is still a firehose. When you think about the use cases of why users care about leveraging the power of their friends, it’s to help them get a grasp on current trends, make a purchasing decision, assemble cool stuff to curate, figure out where to go to eat, and to find a cool place to take a holiday. Simple keyword and faceted search doesn’t do that (Well, it sorta does, but hardly ideal).

Nsyght doesn’t do that now…..but we will. And soon.

As always, we’d love to hear what you think about the new nsyght. We are passionate about what we’re doing here and where we are going. But we are even more passionate about hearing what you think. Feel free to reach out to us via email, or our GetSatisfaction page. We try to be pretty responsive folks.

If you’re not a member now, it takes only a minute or two to get things moving, give it a try!

Barely a few days after getting back from SXSW and we have another cool release on our hands. This one has packed quite a lot. So please faster your seatbelts and bring all seats to their forward position. Let’s rock!

Boxee

Boxee is an amazing application for your TV based on the excellent XBMC open source project. In a nutshell, Boxee allows you to watch net videos on your TV. Well, our application allows you to watch videos posted by your friends on your TV too!

If you are a current Boxee user, our application is available via the Boxee app repository. If not, then head over to Boxee.tv to download it!

Like Support

Now not only can you “like” things you find on nsyght, but you can chose to syndicate them down to Facebook or Twitter in a variety of ways!

- By default, things you “like” will be posted to Facebook or Twitter as textual likes, ie a post simply saying that you “liked” something:

- However, you can chose to syndicate your likes as a “Facebook” like, or as a Twitter “favorite”. The choice is yours.

Follow Support

So why did we take so long to support something simple as follow? Well, in our view, following another user and seeing what they post on nsyght is easy. What we wanted to do was give you the ability to not only follow someone, but chose which services you see from that user.

Replies

We can now filter your feed by direct replies to you. Not just for Twitter, but Facebook too! While we already can send you an email notification when someone replies to you, now we have a dedicated filter for replies too!

Some snazzy pictures:

Of course this release has more bug fixes than you could shake your fist at, but I’ll save you from the endless list of stuff that we fixed.

Being the ultimate party spoilers/wet blankets that we are here at Nsyght HQ, we’ve banished them with a new feature we’ve released, downstream link previewing.

Basically, to give users more understanding of what a link is about, we send our hard working crawlers to the site to grab a short preview so you know what your clicking on. Sounds great right? Well sadly, now that we do this, you’ll never get Rickrolled again:

In honor of nsyght being at SXSW (we’re at the UK Digital Mission booth, stop by to say hello), we’ve put together a small promotion to help get the word out about our SXSW coverage.

What is it?

Basically, anytime someone tags a photo, a video, or a general update from twitter (or any other service we support), we will show it in real time on nsyght. So, if you’re not here, you can sorta be here vicariously.

So how does the competition work?

1. Create an account at nsyght + add your twitter info

2. Tell your friends about our SXSW realtime coverage:

http://nsyg.ht/sxsw

So we’ve had a great deal of success with our Turkish localization, so I thought I’d reach out and ask what other languages should we be looking to support next?

Sure, we could probably support every language you’ve ever heard of and even some you haven’t at the drop of a hat, but fundamentally it’s important to follow the lead of our users. So, what I’d like to ask is that everyone either tweet, post on Get Satisfaction, or even comment in this blog which language they would like to see next. Sorry, for this tranche, we wont consider Pirate, Klingon, or Esperanto.

As a FYI, our current hit list includes (in no order):

1. Portuguese

2. German

3. Mandarin Chinese

4. French

5. Spanish

6. Russian

Let us know what you think!

Nsyght is seeing a lot of growth all over the world, so part of our strategy since day one has been to focus on more than just the English market. Sure, people who use twitter and Facebook might know a little English, but if your going to go to a foreign country, it is really bad form to just *assume*.

So, we have launched support for our first non-English language. Turkey. Turkey is a fantastic market, has an incredibly passionate and social networking-savvy audience, and is one of the youngest populations in Europe.

We are not ending here though. We have a lot of users in places like Brazil, France, Germany, and even China! If you would like your local language to be supported, please get in touch with us or post a message to our Feedback widget.

Parti zamanı!

So users were pretty happy when we released the feature to notify you when someone replies to you on twitter. That in itself is pretty powerful, because let’s face it, we aren’t logged into Twitter 24/7 just yet. So we recognized that only solved part of the problem.

With services like Friendfeed you can receive an email alert when someone replies to a discussion you are subscribed to, but with nsyght, we just notified you when someone replied to just YOU. Well today that changes. Now, nsyght is able to alert you when someone replies to a discussion that your involved with, just like Friendfeed, so even if the reply is not to you directly. This is pretty interesting, so much “discussion” is lost on twitter with the furious pace of the firehose, and the lack of context from the myriad of @ replies we get in our stream. So, now not only can you search for and discover interesting discussions, but you can also make sure you are kept aware of what people are saying long after you’ve gone.

Ok, we didn’t stop there. Now that you will have your finger on the pulse, we realized that this means your going to WANT to be involved in a lot more discussions. What if we sent you a mail about a comment that you really wanted to reply to, but for whatever reason were too busy to login, was dashing into a taxi, or planned to visit some friendly totalitarian regime that frowned on twitter? Well, worry not, because now you can post discussion replies via email!

And faster than you can say Vint Cerf, viola! Your post is added to the realtime discussion!

As always, feedback welcome.
