*Fixed* Pownce Friend Importing

Uncategorized

Some of you may have noticed that our Pownce integration broke recently. Our good friends at Pownce recently changed the markup used on their pages, and while the microformat tags were not changed, the pagination markup that allows our spider to discover your friends did.

So what does this mean? The nightly process we use to keep your friendships in sync was failing because the structure of Pownce’s pages had changed. So our little spider kept wandering around on Pownce and not finding the pagination markup it was expecting.

It’s all nice and working now. We here at Nsyght hope Pownce supports oauth soon, grabbing data like this will be far more elegant in the future when they do!

New Feature: Nsyght supports oauth

Uncategorized

Over the weekend we quietly rolled out support for the oauth protocol. What is oauth?

An open protocol to allow secure API authentication in a simple and standard method from desktop and web applications.
oauth.net

What does that mean? Think of oauth as OpenID for data. Currently, if you wish to setup full bookmark syncing with your del.icio.us account, you need to provide us with your credentials. Hey, we are not going to skip town with that data or sell them to spammers, but how do YOU know that we aren’t?

In steps oauth. Our first target integration is with the excellent Ma.gnolia service. In fact, we owe a lot to our implementation to both Todd Sieling at Ma.gnolia (for getting us excited about oauth), and Andy Smith for providing a nice tidy library which was easy to extend for our use.

What does that mean for you? Well now you can sync your bookmarks with your Ma.gnolia account, and as other services around the web roll out oauth support, we will be able to hook into them rather quickly. We like easy things that bring great benefit, if only life was like that.

New Feature: Nsyght bookmarklet

Uncategorized

We finally released the first version of our bookmarklet today. Now instead of having to add bookmarks from del.icio.us, ma.gnolia, or (even worse) by hand, you can simply drag it to your browsers toolbar and add sites as you surf.

When you find a site you like, just click the bookmarklet and you will be redirected to a simple form with the sites details all filled out. Once you submit the link, we will happily redirect you back to the page you were on so you can continue surfing.

You can find the bookmarklet on your profile page directly underneath your profile photo. As always, comments welcome.

New Feature: Nsyght supports OpenID

Uncategorized

The guys have been really hard at work this week and we are delighted to roll out OpenID support on Nsyght.

What is OpenID?

OpenID is a new way to identify yourself all over the web. With your own personal OpenID you can login to any OpenID-enabled site (there are over 1,000 of them and that number is growing everyday) and identify yourself as you.

It’s one username and one password for all of the sites that you go to.

source: myopenid.com

If you already have an account on Nsyght, just navigate to the “profile/bio” link on your profile page. Once there, you can easily switch to use OpenID to login instead of your existing username/password. Don’t worry, doing this won’t change any profile/friend details or alter your bookmarks. Once you’ve added an OpenID identity, you can add others or remove them as well.

For new users, joining is now even easier. On the register page, just chose to use your OpenID identity when registering your account.

Give us your bookmarks!

Uncategorized

Do you have an account with delicious or magnolia? Then Nsyght could use your help.

Nsyght is building what we hope to be a new type of social search, a search that is directly driven and personalized by your bookmarks. What does that mean? It means we only search what you tell us to by the bookmarks you submit. The more bookmarks, the more pages and sites we crawl.

While we are just an alpha, our technology already does just that. But in order to grow and show more general searches (ie a search that does not match any pages in your bookmark list) we need more bookmarks to be populated in our system. Now if you have a delicious or magnolia account, we make this rather easy. Just tell us your username details and we will do the rest.

If you have any friends or buddies in your social network that has a lot of bookmarks, ask them to stop on by to help us out. The more bookmarks we get, the better and more custom Nsyght’s search will be.

New Feature: Kick those lousy sites to the curb

Uncategorized

Nsyght is a big fan in making our users happy. We’ve recently rolled out a pretty cool feature we hope you will all enjoy as much as we do.

How many times have you tried a search, say for a product or for some event, and found the results littered with splogs or useless link sites? Sure, we’ve all had that. Well we’ve now implemented a feature to let you “block” pages that you don’t feel are relevant, or pages from sites you just plain don’t like.

The added bonus is once you block a page, it stays gone, from ALL your searches. Don’t worry, you can change your mind later and bring the site back from the dead.

So you does it work? First off, log in. :)

Next, do a search. You’ll notice the lovely little Block iconunder each result.

Ok, here comes the fun part. Click it. Go ahead, you know you want to!

Block site

Great, so now you’ve blocked your first site and your having a little blockers remorse. Don’t worry. Just click onto your profile page and find the control panel, it looks like this:

Control Panel

Once you select “blocked sites”, you’ll see a list of all the sites you’ve blocked. Here’s what one looks like:

Remove Blocks

Click “unblock” and presto! the site is back in your index. Well, when we say presto, we really mean about 24 hours depending on when our index was last updated.

As always, comments and feedback welcome.

Open Issues (bugs) a go-go

Uncategorized

Please post bugs or defects you find on the site here in the comments. We will update this thread as we resolve them. Resolution dates are in parenthesis.

Issues:
1. IE7 - Unable to upload pictures on profile pages. (ETA - Monday 24th Sept)
2. Duplicate results - Our engine is treating www.foo.com, foo.com, and foo.com/index.html as unique items. (tbd)
3. Cache regeneration - Cache is not getting regenerated correctly on the People page which means new users are not getting shown. (ETA - Monday 24th Sept)
4. Ma.gnolia export - Bookmarks are not getting exported to Ma.gnolia (import is operational). (ETA - Tuesday 24th Sept)
5. Logging in has been temporarily disabled while we deploy our latest build.
6. Registration issues (Thanks Piero and Andrew C - we added Google’s Analytics javascript to the site yesterday evening and for some reason it was interfering with our form validation. Apologies to anyone who ran into this. The code has been removed and Registration is functioning again).
7. Safari 3 - The js is not rendering properly on the registration page under Safari 3.

Browsers tested so far: IE7, IE6 (very limited), Firefox 2/Flock, Safari 2, Camino (very limited)

Regarding Magnolia Export - We will be holding off supporting this feature until they add support for oauth

Welcome to the Nsyght alpha preview

Uncategorized

Hi Everyone,

After almost 4 months of development, we are finally ready to launch the alpha preview of Nsyght. All of us here at Nsyght have worked really hard to build something unique, a social search engine that actually uses your knowledge and your social network to help improve search. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but we hope you’ll find Nsyght to be as useful as we do!

For those of you just finding out about us for the first time, here is a quick introduction to what we are about.

Nsyght is a totally new social search engine with a lofty goal, of giving you the user the ability to create your own custom search engine using your social network. Every time you bookmark a site, or add a new friend to your network, we know a little more about you and what you consider relevant. So the more knowledge you share with us, the more refined and personalized your search will become.

To help ease the transition, we have integrated Nsyght with del.icio.us and ma.gnolia. So you can either use Nsyght to feed those accounts with bookmarks you create here, or you can chose to keep bookmarking in those services and push those to us. Or you could do both! Every time we get another bookmark, your search continues to be custom tailored to you.

What you see here today is only a fraction of what we are currently working on. We have a lot more features and integrations in the works, things that we hope you will find useful.

If you see something you don’t understand, find a bug, have a rant or a suggestion, please do not hesitate to drop us a line (hellothere AT nsyght.com). And if you like what you see, please do blog about us or shout us out to your friends.
